just got my third draft of my thesis proposal returned to me. it has "i still have no idea what you're talking about" scrawled across the top by my committee chair. i am disheartened.
the thing is i would fix it if i thought there was somethign wrong with it. the thing that makes me doubt if theres something wrong with it is that my other committee member (alas not my chair) LOVED it. he read the first draft and said he would sign it right away. My third member says shell sign anything the other two sign.
sooo....is it me? or is it him? im thinking about booting him off the committee cause he is an old school, nose to the grindstone kinda guy. which is fine, in my opinion, for the thesis ITSELF. but the prospectus? for the love of all that is holy just approve it so i can start writing the thing! it doesnt need every typo corrected before you can sign it! also the idea is pretty newish, i guess, in areas he isnt very familiar with. thers surely something to be said to explaining your ideas to newbies, but maybe i can just restrict that to my third committee member (who is a medievalist) and call it good?
heres more evidence that im right. this second teacher apparently liked my idea so much he had a conversation about it with another teacher, who later approached me and expressed a lot of interest. so im thinking about booting current chair, making second teacher my new chair, and bringing this third guy on as reader.
the thing i dont have is a thick skin. or any patience. i guess maybe i could try to grow both, but if all my problems can be solved by booting this guy, then maybe ill just do that.
academia is for chumps.

Can you actually decide who will be your chair?
