spawn broth? anyone?

man this is going to be a cheerful post, i swear it! a lot of funny and weird things have happened to me since my last post, and i have been very excited to blog about them. but i just finished work and for whatever reason im a little bit down tonight. im just not in the groove yet.

but here are some funny things.
1) i made two unexpected friends this week. the first was in a marketplace in seoul. there were a bunch of people there holding up signs that said "free hugs!" in three languages. so...i took them up on it and hugged my first korean. it was super sweet and cute! new friends new friends.
2) there is a weird fellowship of foreigners here. the other day i was walking down the street and some white guy was walking down the other side. we made eye contact, he smiled and nodded, and i did too. just because we were whiteys in korea. racist? maybe. pleasant? certainly.
3) did you know the word "blessed" is etymologically related to the word "bloodied" or "wounded"? that would have been useful to know.
4) i miss fresh food! it is farmer's market time back in utah, and i am craving me some peaches. they have peaches here but they are a different type, with crunchy, white flesh. sweet, but different. i totally screwed up the first batch i bought, i left them out on the counter to get soft, like peaches should. but they just stayed crunchy and then one day they were moldy. lesson learned.
there are ladies on the sidewalk selling peppers and long skinny eggplants, but i wouldn't know how to buy them if i tried. wave money in your face? point? should EGG PLANT really slowly?
5) that reminds me i know now why koreans are so skinny. like 70% of every meal is vegetables! and they aren't prepared with fat and oil, they are made with vinegar and pepper. even their big, fancy meals aren't all fried cheesy meats (god bless america...tear...), they have some meat but it's usually eaten with leaves and seaweed. and of course the ubiquitous kim chi, which has wormed its way into my good graces.

bah. maybe im justin tv withdrawals. i watched the first episode of HBO's True Blood and frankly loved it. it basically takes on all the feminist issues of twilight (which i AM intersted in for scholarly reasons! among others...) and then some, and they do it well. but it is pretty graphic and im nervous lately about the images i put before my eyes because apparently they fool your brain. good tv wah!!

Good TV is so hard to find.
This past week, since Shaunee was here, we invited our neighbors, the Kwiezinski's over for a Korean meal. We had a great time. I am most certain that parts of the meal were not very authentic, but none the less, it was weird and fun. They did not want to take the kim chi home with them. :(
Everybody liked the banana milk. Ginger candy is yummy. Bulgogi is yummy. Their plum drink is nice.

I hope that each day is an adventure, Anna. Take care.

i've been thinking - what can a person do with a microwave and a stovetop and (it sounds like) drastically different ingredients than one is used to? Rice pudding? Rice flour cupcakes (http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipes/recipe.php?recipeId=792)? What do you have to work with? I think this could be fun ;)

I tried making cupcakes or muffins out of soy flour. It didn't rise right.
